What do you think is the best and worst thing about Detours??
With all the talk about Diamond Ring on the forum, the rest of the greatness on the album hasn't been mentioned in a while!  So yes, while my least favorite part of the album is the chorus on Diamond Ring, I absolutely love OOOH (great acronym!!) and the vocals on that are superb!  Next best thing is Peace, and Now that you're gone, and the rest of the album! But to put it in short,  Best = Vocals on Out of Our HeadsWorst= chorus on Diamond Ring :O)

    How very clever deadends :O)

Apparently in a lot of US states you have to request songs on the radio to get them played. I was quite surprised to read all sorts of stuff on other sites (obviously!) that Madonna was having to even do radio shows to get people to call in to request songs.

Apparently we now live in an age where marketing people are so impatient that they pretty much give whatever it is that they're marketing, 48hrs to become a hit, or it's done, canceled, whatever. It's insane. You know it's bad when even Madonna has to get people to call in to get her songs played!

Sooooo, call your local radio station to play it! Call every week!

long time lurker here!first post.best songs on the album on my opinion are out of our heard and detours. although with more listens that is likely to change.worst thing about this album is the drum programming on a few of the songs. in relation to diamond ring.......lyricly(sp)? probably not the strongest ive heard from sheryl but vocally the most honest..hope that makes sense

Firstly, Bill thank you for clearing that up! Now it makes perfect sense! lol

Arlene, I'm pretty sure that Motivation is Sheryl's sarcasm at perfection! It's about this lazy ass next generation that's not being given any favors by being the 'instant gratification' generation, and I just love every line of that song b/c Sheryl is so sarcastic and I love it, and that song is just the perfect epitome of her sarcasm to me! Although the 'all my loser friends' part probably raised an eyebrow or two in her inner circle...but then again, if they're in that circle, they know how sarcastic Sheryl is so they probably know it's a tongue in check stab at the way 'those kids' are behaving/acting these days.

And I agree with Stones and Ann about the part in OOOH, 'every man is his own prophet, ohhhh every prophet just a man', that's my favorite part of the song, I love that part!!!

So I have to add that part to the 'best part' of Detours in addition to the vocals of the song. :O)

Best: "Shine Over Babylon" (lyrics, tone, rhythm, CHORUS, message), "Make it Go Away" (guitar "bow wow wow wooow wooooow", lyrics, EMOTION especially at the end, and the fact that it's quite personal), and "Diamond Ring" (LOVE the rawness of the voice, love the chorus).

Not-so-great: Some parts of "Peace Be Upon Us" and "Lullaby for Wyatt" is kinda too slow for me.

BUT...I love "Detours" and it's a fantastic treat to listen to at any time! cyclopes

Best - Sheryl's back with a strong, consistent, body of work. Her best since Globe Sessions. After C'mon and Wildflower, I was starting to think she reached her artistic peak in the 90's. But now I'm singing the praises of Sheryl again to everyone, just like I did in the 90's.

Worst - Shine Over Babylon. What a mess. It's a bombardment of incomprehensible lyrics with a horrid irritating chorus. I can't stand it, I don't get it, I skip it every time. This is the get a beer/go to the bathroom song at her concert.

Well evita, I don't like the chorus on Shine over Babylon. Just thought I'd let you know. Love the rest of the CD and love, love, love Out of our heads. Vocals, arrangement, lyrics, and DRUMS!!!
On the personal archives note. I'm sure they will eventually come out in one way or another as the music industry scrambles for ways to sell CD's ok

Best: it's new music and at certain times it's all good.
Worst: knowing there is something like 8 or 10 songs recorded that didn't make the album and we'll likely never get to hear them depressed

just thinking, imagine how many good songs she has recorded and never released them. One could have a field day in her personal archives.

I like the line in "Out Of Our Heads" that go's "Every man is his own prophet, every prophet, just a man." That's profound.
I would have done that song as a heavy slide guitar thing instead of that keyboard synth thing myself.

lol, I wrote that late at night, I'd probably put it differently now that it's morning... but it's true, I don't like songs about peace.

One song live: Make It Go Away - I just really love that song.

Well I Love the album cover including the pictures. to me less is more....Woman and guitar. I love the simplicity and innocence reflected. Classy too. Inside picture so great! The back of the CD is very different. Almost looks like she's in handcuffs! You have to look at it a few times. I love it! Very cool. When these cardboard jackets came out I didn't like them. Now I love them. I can't break it! I've cracked so many CD's. I love the whole f'n thing!

The best thing about Detours in my opinion is that Sheryl included songs that expressed her truth: her life experiences and what she's observed in the world that concerns her. When she sings these songs that express her authenticity as a person, she can sing them with real passion because they are a part of her. She didn't write them to make the top 40 on the radio. She was inspired to write about these things. I admire her for writing about issues that are important to her. As she said, she hopes that her songs encourage people to discuss these issues.

My favorite songs on Detours are:
God Bless this Mess - it's folky, natural, and relevant
Peace Be Upon Us -it's a world peace song and a good clapping song; I love when both languages are entertwined, symbolizing unity.
Gasoline - I like that it's futuristic but frighteningly close if we continue on the same path. I really like when Sheryl emphasizes the word "tea" (Boston tea").I like the catchy refrain. The "Yeah yeah yeah" harmony reminds me of the Beatles. It would be great to see this one live.
OOOH - How can anyone not like this song????? At the beginning, she sounds like Shania Twain to me. It has a great message. I have to see this live!
Motivation - Can anyone explain this one? Is it about the young celebs who have gone astray in Hollywood? I really don't have a clue but I like the song.
Make It Go Away - very personal and Sheryl gives us an opportunity to feel her pain as she was going through this traumatic ordeal. So many people can relate to this. The tick tocking of the clock is significant.
Lullaby for Wyatt - I love that she plays acoustic guitar and I love the instumental parts. Even though Wyatt is the joy of her life, this is a melancholy song about someday when Wyatt will find his way in the world and she will be without her greatest love. She doesn't know yet, that that's what the teen-age years are for. The separation begins then. It's mutual!
LIF - Gee, I almost forgot this one and I really enjoy it!! She wrote a song about the people of New Orleans. They have a special place in her heart and she wants to make the world aware of how these people have been neglected after Katrina, so that they will receive the help that they deserve. I like the catchy rhythm and the Mardi Gras ambiance to the song. Question - who knows what instrument makes the sound when she sings "Everyone come together" (first beat). Is it a synthesizer or bass?

I guess that the worst part of Detours is Diamond Ring for me. I know that the song is relevant to her but I just don't like the melody of the chorus.
Who am I to critique Sheryl though? I've never written a song in my life!!

Ha. It was just the term I thought of but obviously realised it mightn't be clear to anyone else. Everything is an obvious (bald) or factual, straightforward statement about things. I kind of the like the abstract or the character (the hats and wigs).

I'll compile a glossary before posting again.

LMFAO Daphna! Of all the comments, holy jeebus, 'I don't like songs about peace' I'm not sure why, but I thought that was hysterical! For me, it's always a toss up, if I could hear just one song live, whether it would be Peace, OOOH or Now that you're gone...but hey, at least we do like the album!

And I love Make it Go Away...now that is an emotional song where the notes are great to listen to :O)

Bill, can you explain what you mean by 'the songwriting is quite bald'?!!

Not listened to it all yet but the songwriting is quite bald. It'd be nice to see (hear) some hats or wigs as is the case in her best work. Only thing I'd actually say I liked (listening to it backwards because of how it is on my I-pod) is Motivation
